Twenty-five farmers and market vendors in Levuka have completed the “Basic Vegetable Production Training” aimed at reviving the town’s supply of fresh produce and restoring the vibrancy of its local market.
The training, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, focused on practical farming techniques to help participants grow vegetables more efficiently, sustainably, and nutritiously.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Inosi Kuridrani, reflected on Levuka’s proud agricultural past and the need to revive it.
“Back in the 1980s, the old Levuka market beside the market bridge was overflowing with vegetables, fruits, and crops every Saturday,” he said.
“Today, the once-prevailing abundance appears to have vanished abruptly, prompting a critical reflection on its causes and the means by which it might be restored.”
He added that the training was about planting seeds of hope, resilience, and change.
“Today, we have witnessed not just the sharing of knowledge, but the planting of seeds, seeds of resilience, innovation, and hope for a more food-secure Levuka.”
Participants learned key skills in vegetable husbandry, soil preparation, crop care, and climate-smart farming.
These tools, Hon. Kuridrani said, are essential for rebuilding the local food supply and improving community health.
“These are not just farming skills; they are tools for change. Tools that will help us address food and nutrition security, combat Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and improve livelihoods across Levuka.”
The Assistant Minister encouraged participants to apply what they had learned, share it with others, and continue to improve their farming practices.
“May this moment mark the beginning of a renewed chapter, wherein Levuka reclaims its reputation for fresh produce, wholesome living, and a vibrant sense of community,” he said.
He reminded farmers and vendors that the Ministry is committed to supporting them not just during training, but every step of the way.
“Our officers in Levuka serve as your dedicated partners; engage with them, seek guidance, and collaborate toward revitalizing Levuka into a thriving and resilient community.”
The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways will continue to support farmers across Fiji with training, farming tools, seedlings, and technical advice to help improve food supply, nutrition, and income.
