The Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Inosi Kuridrani, visited the ministry’s Levuka Town office today, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen support systems, staffing, and infrastructure to unlock the full potential of agricultural development across the Lomaiviti group.
“You’ve shown remarkable resilience despite limited resources, but to truly unlock the potential of our programs, we must invest in the people who deliver them,” he said.
He encouraged a shift in focus toward empowering field officers, ensuring they have the tools, transport, and working conditions necessary to serve maritime farming communities effectively.
The importance of accurate data collection and reporting was also highlighted, noting that logistical constraints in remote areas can hinder service delivery and visibility.
“We must be honest about the realities on the ground. If we want meaningful outcomes, we need to equip our teams to reach every farmer, even in the most isolated locations.”
He reiterated the Ministry’s vision to transition farmers from subsistence to commercial agriculture, with new programs supporting smallholder development, orchard establishment, and mechanization an inclusion to existing ones.
He expressed deep confidence in the agricultural potential of the Lomaiviti group, describing it as a region rich in opportunity and resilience, noting that with the right support from staff empowerment to improved infrastructure, Lomaiviti could become a model for sustainable, inclusive growth.
“There is so much untapped strength here, and if we invest wisely and work together, this region can lead the way in transforming agriculture for the benefit of all in the Lomaiviti group.”
He called for a renewed commitment to empowering officers so they can better serve farmers and communities.
As part of his visit, the Assistant Minister will also tour agricultural projects and development sites across Ovalau.
These engagements reflect his commitment to nurturing future generations and supporting grassroots initiatives that strengthen food security, education, and community resilience, underscoring the Ministry’s dedication to inclusive growth and sustained progress throughout the Lomaiviti group.
