THE LEGACY OF HARVINDAR SINGH: A JOURNEY OF DEDICATION AND INNOVATION IN FARMING

Harvindar Singh is a third-generation farmer proudly managing J Singh and Sons farm in Tailevu, a name that holds deep familial significance.

The farm, founded by his grandfather 60 years ago, started with dairy farming, accompanied by small-scale cassava and dalo cultivation.

Over the years, the farm has flourished under the care of Harvindar's family. With his father retired, Harvindar has taken the reins, continuing the family legacy with passion and determination.

Harvindar's commitment to improving the farm is unwavering. Despite often being away from the farm, he is constantly seeking information on best practices, particularly in areas like calf rearing.

J Singh and Sons farm is home to an impressive array of livestock, including 820 cattle, of which 210 are milking cows, 169 are heifers and dry cows, and the remaining are steers and calves. Additionally, the farm hosts 120 sheep and 130 goats, making it a diverse and vibrant agricultural hub.

Farming is not without its challenges. Harvindar faces issues such as theft, tuberculosis (TB), high feed costs, and low milk prices but despite these hurdles, he remains resilient.

The farm produces approximately 1,600 liters of milk daily, thanks to a mix of Kiwi cross, Jersey, Ayrshire, and Friesen cross with local breeds. He has also identified and addressed challenges such as udders and mastitis, ensuring his cows receive the necessary medication and care.

A significant milestone for Harvindar was the construction of a calf shed in 2019, with assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture.

“The ministry provided materials, and the farmer covered the remaining costs. This initiative was crucial, especially after a TB outbreak in 2019 significantly reduced the stock,” he said.

“So far the farm has successfully reared nearly 100 calves, thanks to the nurturing environment and appropriate rearing system established in the new shed.”

Harvindar believes that building a good calf shed and feeding them properly helps create a nurturing environment for calves, reducing the risk of disease and encouraging high growth rates.

The farm is also distinguished as the only dairy farm in the area with a milk cooler tank, underscoring its commitment to maintaining high standards and innovation in dairy farming.

Harvindar’s journey is a testament to his dedication, resilience, and continuous quest for improvement. His efforts ensure that J Singh and Sons farm remains a cornerstone of agricultural excellence, honoring the legacy of his grandfather while paving the way for future generations.
