In the serene multiracial Nawaka in Nadi, the story of Poonam Priteshma stands out as a testament to resilience and passion.
Since the establishment of her duck farm in 2016, Poonam has navigated numerous challenges while remaining committed to her vision of becoming a leading duck farmer.
Poonam's journey into duck farming began with childhood visits to her aunt's farm, where she developed a deep love for ducks and chickens. This passion eventually transformed into a business venture.
Starting with just one female duck, Poonam and her husband mated it with a neighbor's male duck, resulting in their first flock of 31 ducklings.
From these modest beginnings, the farm steadily expanded, driven by Poonam's unwavering determination.
The path to success, however, has been fraught with difficulties.
"There have been nights when my family and I were up chasing stray dogs to protect our ducks and goats," Poonam recalls.
Despite their best efforts, the attacks from dogs and mongoose led to significant losses. Rainy seasons brought additional challenges, as the shelters became too wet, requiring constant maintenance and care.
Yet, through it all, Poonam and her family never gave up. Their relentless efforts to protect their stock sometimes made them the talk of the neighborhood, but their determination was well-known and respected.
Innovation has been a cornerstone of Poonam's approach to farming. Over the past decade, she has dedicated herself to breeding crossbreed chickens and ducks, always striving for the best possible outcomes.
Her commitment to research and experimentation has led to the development of their own feed for ducks, ensuring optimal nutrition and health for their stock.
"We've invested a lot of time and effort into producing our own feed to ensure our ducks get the best nutrition," says Poonam.
This innovative spirit has not only improved the quality of their livestock but also established Poonam as a trailblazer in the field.
Poonam's farm has grown to become one of the major duckling suppliers in the west of Fiji, with buyers traveling from as far as Rakiraki and Sigatoka to purchase her ducklings.
Her husband has been an invaluable partner in this journey, assisting with the ducks and building shelters to protect them.
Together, they have created a
thriving business that is a source of pride for their family and community.
Despite the many challenges they have faced, Poonam remains positive and encourages others to pursue their passions.
"It is good that you develop your passion; there will be challenges, but keep wading," she advises.
She also shares that losing stock can be disheartening, but every setback is a lesson which can be overcome.
With 250 ducks and 100 chickens currently on her farm, this hardworking lady farmer is a testament to resilience and the unyielding spirit of a true farmer.
Her journey continues to inspire those around her, proving that with passion and determination, anything is possible.
