Fiji and New Caledonia to Foster Agricultural Development Support

Fiji and New Caledonia will engage in mutual agriculture development that will further enable boosts to the crop and livestock sectors.

This is an outcome of the Joint Working Group discussion between representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and officials of the New Caledonian Agriculture Department which have highlighted key collaborative activities between the two countries.

Mutually agreed partnership in crop development includes knowledge sharing on work done by the two countries in regards to better understanding seed and planting materials which encompasses the exchange of information and capacity building. 

As part of this agreement, there will also be a procedural agreement for private nurseries that will be part of the accreditation process for both root crops and fruit trees. 

Training would also be delivered for young farmers, technical staff and private sector players with an exchange trip to New Caledonia by officials of the Ministry of Agriculture. 

For Livestock Development, the following areas of mutually agreed cooperation have been highlighted and includes the Sharing of Limousine Genetics (UPRA) – which encompasses, exchange trip to New Caledonia to identify stock/ farming practice, importation Protocol for embryos and the identification of demands in quantity of number of embryos. 

The Breeding Program (UPRA), National Identification System for Cattle (Chamber for Agriculture New Caledonia) and Livestock Nutrition (Chamber for Agriculture New Caledonia) are also part of the development cooperation. 

Minister for Agriculture, Dr Mahendra Reddy thanked the New Caledonia Agriculture Department and His Excellency Sujiro Sean, French Ambassador to further the vision and noted that these projects will add to the existing programmes in commercial Agricultural Sector and grow Fijis export.

His Excellency, Sujiro Sean, Ambassador of France to Fiji declared “This is the first step of cooperation between two neighbours of the Pacific, Fiji and New Caledonia, which will deliver concrete outcome of Agriculture Food Security and Rural Livelihood.
