60per cent of Fijian Households received seed packs: Minister Reddy

Almost 60per cent of Fijian households received seed packs distributed by the Ministry of Agriculture since the first wave of COVID-19 and as a response to regular occurring natural disasters.


Minister Agriculture, Waterways and Environment, Hon. Dr Mahendra Reddy made the revelation while officiating at the seeds handover by the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Palaniswamy Subramanyan Karthigeyan to the Fijian Government today.


“The Ministry has distributed 106,431 individual seed packs to households throughout Fiji. These coverage showed that more than 59% of households in Fiji have received this assistance,” he informed His Excellency Karthigeyan.


Dr Reddy said the program contributed immensely to scaling up existing programs and ensured that all Fijian households remained food secured despite the impact of COVID-19.


He added the initiative would also assist the Ministry of Agriculture to boost agricultural exports by assisting farmers who were targeting this market.
