Two horses, dalo and yaqona
planting material and shalon cloths was today handed over to the village of
Nukulau, Nasau in Ra to help boost their production levels.
The village is located on the
border between Naitasiri and Ra and was assisted 2 weeks prior with horse drawn
implements, also handed over by the Ministry of Agriculture.
While handing over the
assistance today, Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Environment Hon. Dr.
Mahendra Reddy said the unique challenges faced by rural and remote communities
was known to Government and it (Government) would continue to provide the
relevant support needed to bolster their current efforts.
“This assistance handed out
today is viable to lift the standard of farming here in Nukulau and we hope
that you put it to good use and look after it for longevity’s sake.
“Just two weeks ago, we were
here to hand over horse-driven farming implements to help increase your
productivity and as I said on that day, that was just the beginning.
“Today, we are here again to
further leverage your agricultural prowess with the provision of 2 more horses,
planting materials and shalon cloth to help set up a nursery right here in your
remote community of Nukulau. This is a promise delivered, a promise kept,” he
said.
Villagers of Nukulau were also
urged to treat their farming as a business, to reinvest in their farms and
incorporate business models into their farm to grow and develop their farming
entrepreneurship.
The assistance handed over to
this remote community was made possible through the Ministry's Highlands
Development Programme.
