May 20, 2022

More than 50 farmers and 3 farming clusters in the Nadi area received small nursery packages from the Ministry of Agriculture as part of efforts to boost food security in the country.

While handing over the packages to these successful recipients at Legalega Research Station, Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Environment Hon. Dr Mahendra Reddy said the packages should allow them to produce more and have adequate supply adding that the surplus produce created can be sold to both local and export markets.

“There isn't a better time than this to introduce these programmes as you can see that around the world the increase in food prices is affecting every household, so the only solution to this is to push for more production into the markets.

“We are very excited about the progress in the agriculture sector locally, of course, you have all worked hard and I want to thank all the farmers because through your combined efforts, we were able to and still do, have a good control of our food security," said Minister Reddy.

Meanwhile, Ms. Anita Goundar, the President of Jetset Florist, thanked the Ministry of Agriculture for supporting the florists and the farmers through the nursery packages as it would assist them to produce more for their family and positively impact their productivity.

“This is really good for us and I believe that we should make use of it and generate income for our families as most of us were affected by the pandemic and we are very grateful to the Government for the continued assistance brought to us in the agriculture sector,” said Ms. Goundar.

Under the Small Nursery Programme, the Ministry of Agriculture will assist 600 individuals and 120 farming groups.
