Minister Reddy Urges Farmers to Go Commercial

February 11, 2020

Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Waterways and Environment Hon. Dr. Mahendra Reddy has called on farmers to think big and aspire to become commercial farmers.

While commissioning a new agro-export packing shed for G. Group Fiji Limited in Waimalika, Nadi today Dr. Reddy stated that Fiji’s agriculture sector had a distinct advantage in terms of weather conditions, soil structure and fertility and associated cost of water.

He acknowledged the opening of the new agro-export packaging shed as it would create employment, in turn benefiting the Fijian economy.

Minister Reddy also called on farmers to venture into commercial farming in order to be able to export their products.

Highlighting the availability of water sources in the country, Minister Reddy stated that farmers needed to take advantage of the low water costs as it was an expensive exercise in foreign countries.

“The unit cost of water in overseas countries are very high and here water is readily available. We are very fortunate and that is one of the advantages we have in terms of agriculture production.

“Water for agriculture in Fiji is easily available but in countries like Australia, New Zealand, and America the unit cost of water is very high. Here water is freely available.”
