2020 Agriculture Census Will Ensure Better Planning

The Agriculture Census is one of most significant data collection exercise undertaken around the world especially in developing countries where farming activities is key to sustainable livelihood.

While speaking at the press conference on the 2020 Fiji Agriculture Census at Ministry of Agriculture Headquarters, Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Waterways and Environment, Hon. Dr Mahendra Reddy said, “Our coordinated effort to achieve this activity clearly indicates how much we value and acknowledge timely and quality statistics.”

“It collates important agricultural information that will ensure better planning and formulation of appropriate strategies for the sector.”

“It also allows government to analyze and measure the impact of its intervention across time.”

“Policy makers at national and international level and those developing investment strategies to enhance economic development, face many challenges with the changing face of agriculture in the 21st century.”

Minister Reddy added while agriculture is the primary source to feed, clothe and provide materials for a growing population, the challenge was to lift people out of hunger and poverty, sustain the water and land resources and reduce the impact on the environment and global warming.

“These are issues that go beyond national boundaries.”

“Improvement of agricultural statistics initiative provide the vision for national and international statistical systems to produce the basic data and information required for this century.”

The 2020 Agriculture Census is set to begin on the 10th to the 29th of February.
