Ministry to Explore Pharmacies as an Option to Provide Livestock Medication

January 2, 2020

The Ministry of Agriculture will soon explore options to have animal and livestock medication issued by pharmacies nationwide.

This follows issues raised by livestock farmers on the need to have medication readily available to them when needed.

While responding to concerns raised by these farmers, Minister for Agriculture Hon. Dr Mahendra Reddy said the Ministry would look at addressing the issue by exploring the option to have pharmacies also procure and provide livestock medication and overall animal health care medicine at stores nationwide.

“We need to have experts handling medication as this is their area of expertise rather than farmers involving the Fiji Co-operative Dairy Company Limited for all medication on livestock,” Minister Reddy said.

He elaborated that pharmacies would be the best possible solution to this issue as pharmacies had the reach to serve not only farmers but the public at large, especially pet owners who also frequently requested for this service.

This revelation was well received by farmers as this would ensure medication for their animals would be made readily available to them whenever needed.

This would also help the Fiji Co-operative Dairy Company Limited to focus on their core business, looking after the interests of dairy farmers and to help in improving milk production.
