The Ministry of Agriculture urges the public not to
purchase any pesticides that are repacked, do not display proper labelling and
do not have a pesticide registration number on the label.
According to the Acting Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways, Dr.
Vinesh Kumar, there has been a rapid rise in the illegal sales of homemade
pesticides that promise to control bed bugs and other related insects.
In compliance with Acts number 41 of 1971 and 32 of 1976, the Ministry of
Agriculture regulates the registration and sales of pesticides in Fiji.
As such, the Ministry of Agriculture informs the public that all pesticides
sold in Fiji must be registered under the Pesticides Act by the Registrar of
Pesticides based at the Koronivia Research Station.
Dr. Kumar said that under the regulation, no individual is allowed to
manufacture, pack or sell any unregistered pesticides in the country.
During a recent survey, Dr Kumar says that the Ministry has confiscated several
such pesticides from retailers around the country. He strongly discourages the
public from purchasing unregistered pesticides.
