Capacity building to enhance service delivery

September 6, 2023

The ability to design, implement and monitor projects effectively is a cornerstone of our commitment to sustainable development and impactful interventions.

The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways, Dr. Andrew Tukana, highlighted this during the closing of the Result-Based Project Design and Implementation workshop, which aimed to improve the designing, implementing, and monitoring of projects for government officials at the Southern Cross Hotel in Suva last week.

He said projects and programs play a pivotal role in achieving our overarching goals to be competitive, sustainable and resilient.

He reminded the participants that the journey was far from over and he hoped that the lessons from the workshop would continue to resonate in their work, resulting in better outcomes, greater accountability, and a profound impact on those they serve.

“This training has equipped you with the tools to align your projects with strategic plans, set meaningful Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and ensure that the outcomes reflect our collective vision for the farmers, iTaukei, women and children, rural dwellers and small and medium enterprises that we all serve,” said Dr Tukana.

Dr. Tukana said learning from each other will result in the improvement of practices and overall delivery of services.

“As you receive your well-earned certificates, I encourage you to carry forward the knowledge you have gained. Let the principles of results–based planning and implementation guide your work as you contribute to the growth and prosperity of our ministry and the nation,” said Dr Tukana.

Dr. Tukana expressed gratitude towards the European Union Sustainable Rural Livelihood Programme, as well as guest speakers Mr Kwabena Boakye and Dr Andrew Jacque, for their invaluable contribution to the training.

“Their expertise has helped illuminate the path and navigate the complexities of modern project planning and implementation,” he said.

Thirty-five participants from the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, the Ministry of I-Taukei Affairs, the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, the Ministry of Trade Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways attended the three-day workshop.
