FARMERS FROM SERUA AND NAMOSI VISIT SIGATOKA FARMS

February 23, 2024

Forty farmers from the Serua and Namosi Provinces visited farmers and exporters in the Sigatoka Valley yesterday to gauge and learn more on vegetable production and exports.

Senior Agriculture Officer (Serua/Namosi), Inosi Vulawalu says that farmers in the two provinces are mostly engaged in flatland farming and through the Ministry’s Flatland Development Programme, the farmers were able to travel to Sigatoka for knowledge sharing purposes.

“It was an eye-opener for the farmers and we thank our colleagues serving in the Nadroga/Navosa provinces for facilitating the visit which enabled our farmers to get a glimpse of how farmers in the Salad Bowl of Fiji are conducting their farming activities,” explained Mr. Vulawalu.

“They truly learnt a lot on the planting methods and techniques used in the valley as well as the challenges faced by exporters when receiving produce from farmers especially in meeting the requirements and standards for the export markets. Those are some areas that we want our farmers to learn from and to practice in their own farms,” explained Mr. Vulawalu.

He adds that the feedback from farmers have been positive and they are truly encouraged to grow their farming businesses to the next level.

The farmer field visit is the first one for this financial year and according to Mr. Vulawalu, more will be organised in the coming months.
