COLLOQUIUM TO ADDRESS IMPORTANT ISSUES REGARDING FOOD SAFETY AND TRADE

February 26, 2024

CODEX is about safe, good food for everyone – everywhere, and realised through maintaining and adhering to expected international food standards, guidelines and code of practice that, contribute to the safety, quality and fairness of international food trade.

These were the opening remarks by the Permanent Secretary of Agriculture and Waterways and currently the Regional Coordinator for Codex Committee for North America and South West Pacific, Dr Andrew Tukana to about 35 participants attending the 2nd North America South West Pacific Codex Colloquium.

“As you are aware, foodborne diseases have been an issue for all societies since the beginning of humanity. The types, severity and impacts of these illnesses have changed through the ages and are still diverse across regions, countries and communities,” said Dr. Tukana.

“Each year worldwide, unsafe food causes an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne diseases and 420,000 deaths. 30% of foodborne deaths occur among children under five years of age.”

Dr Tukana added that the colloquium marks a significant milestone in member countries collective efforts to strengthen food safety and quality standards across the region.

“Our overarching goal is clear to foster collaboration, share knowledge, and enhance regional coordination in Codex standard-setting processes.”

He also stressed on the need for better coordination and collaboration of all member countries especially in mapping the roles and responsibilities of food competent authorities within the region.

“By clarifying jurisdictional boundaries, identifying gaps in regulatory frameworks, and promoting consistency in food safety management practices, members can work towards harmonizing food regulations across borders. Through case studies, best practice sharing, and expert-led discussions, members can gain insights into effective regulatory approaches and explore opportunities for collaboration. This can lead to greater efficiency in regulatory oversight, improved compliance with international standards, and enhanced consumer protection,” added Dr. Tukana.

The colloquium will provide an opportunity to chart a plan forward for the Codex South West Pacific Initiative.

By leveraging insights gained from discussions and collaborative efforts, members can develop actionable strategies to enhance the performance of food regulatory programs in the region. Through regional cooperation, the initiative can be further leveraged to support the region's food regulatory agenda and drive sustainable improvements in food safety and regulation.

The Codex Alimentarius, or "Food Code" is a collection of standards, guidelines and codes of practice adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The Commission, also known as CAC, is the central part of the Joint Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and World Health Organisation (WHO) Food Standards Programme and was established by FAO and WHO to protect consumer health and promote fair practices in food trade.

The meeting in Nadi is attended by agriculture, health and trade professionals from around the North America and South West Pacific and is funded by the U.S. Codex Office of the United States Department of Agriculture.
