Vulagi Settlement farmer, 43-year-old Rajesh Chand is still counting his blessings after he received assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways when his road was washed away during heavy rains in the first few months of this year.
With 24 acres of land, Mr Chand faced hardships when he had to cart his produce across the damaged road for supply to the Suva and Nausori Markets.
“The access road from my house to the main road was completely washed away. It remained that way for a couple of weeks and I sought assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways.”
“I called the Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu and explained to him about my plight. It was a great surprise when he turned up personally to my farm to see for himself the flooded road.”
"Last week, 10 bags of cement finally arrived which was also handed to me by the Ministry and this will enable me to complete much-needed works with regards to my access road," beamed Mr Chand.
“I am so grateful for the prompt assistance from the Ministry and know that they have been supporting farmers in Vulagi for years and for that, we are truly grateful,” added Mr. Chand.
Mr Chand vows to continue farming and hopes that more people will engage in agriculture as a means of food and income security.
