DRASA SCHOOL TEACHER AND FARMER GRATEFUL FOR LANDCARE ADVICE

June 17, 2024

Droughts, land degradation and desertification are disasters that have become frequent over the last few years.

With the growing population and the demands, healthy land cover is constantly diminishing. This has further led to the depletion of natural resources, droughts, floods and wildfires. It is important to understand the severity of the situation and take action to combat desertification and drought as soon as possible.

Every year on June 17th, World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is celebrated to create awareness about the diminishing land cover on earth and urge people to come together to address the pressing issues of sustainable land management.

Director for Land Resources and Planning Division for the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Mr. Amena Banuve said that today’s celebrations was geared towards creating more awareness to all land users on the importance of managing, protecting, and conserving our land to continue with its service for our livelihood.

“Land is central to the well-being of Fiji' ecosystems and biodiversity as it feeds us, shelters us, and provides the backbone to our economy. This year's celebrations is proudly hosted by Joe and Mack Farm owned by Mr. Jonasa Ratuagone.”

Mr. Ratuagone is originally from Marou Village, Naviti, Yasawa who is now leasing in Drasa, Vitogo, Lautoka. A school teacher by profession, Mr Ratuagone has always had a passion for farming.

Now into his fourth year of farming, Mr. Ratuagone has been practicing Sustainable Land Management and Climate Smart Agriculture practices which was introduced to him by the Land Resources Planning Division of the Ministry.

Mr. Ratuagone is grateful that his farm was chosen to host the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought and says that it is an opportunity for other farmers to learn more on sustainable land management practices.

“We must farm sustainably especially with the increasing threats of climate change. It is best that we seek the right advice from the experts. I thank the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for their support and advice over the years and will continue to work with them with regards to sustainable farming.”
