The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways have assisted in the general efforts of mitigation works for Nakabuta Settlement situated in Wainunu, Bua.
A series of landslides have occurred since 2022 and the Waterways Division team based in the Northern Division have managed to carry out works to assist community members.
Director for Waterways, Mr. Marau Vuli says that mitigation works carried out included improvement on the drainage outlets, excavation of a new drain as well as the levelling of existing spoils.
“There are still a lot of works that need to be carried out as the topography of the landslide site is a bit difficult. The soil will slowly erode and will cause continuous runoffs. The landslide has been continuously recurring since September 2022 which means that the debris material and the slope scarp are evidently in a very unstable state,” added Mr. Vuli.
“We will continue to offer our support to the line agencies to ensure that everyone living in the affected areas are safe from harm."
Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna visited the site last week and commended the Waterways Division for their overall efforts.
Hon. Tunabuna adds that the Ministry will continue to monitor the situation on the ground and work with line agencies towards a definite solution.
