It was certainly a Wellness Wednesday with a difference for staff at the Lakena Agriculture Station in Nausori today, as they established a coconut nursery consisting of 2500 coconuts which will be ready for distribution in the next few months.
The coconut seedlings are expected to be distributed through farmer requests in the Lower Naitasiri- from Navatuvula- Baulevu, Wainibuku, Tamavua, Tailevu South and the Rewa Province.
The Lakena coconut nursery has an allocation of 3100 nuts to be planted consisting of 1100 Rotuman Tall and 2000 Fiji tall varieties.
The Lomaivuna Agriculture Station also established their coconut nursery consisting of 700 nuts.
Meanwhile, the West Coconut Nursery, located at the Legalega Research Station in Nadi also has about 2000 nuts and will be distributed to farmers who had already expressed their interest.
The Wainigata Research Station in Cakaudrove currently have around 4000 nuts in their coconut nursery which will be distributed to designated farms across Vanua Levu in the coming weeks.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways remains fully committed to supporting and growing the Coconut Sector in Fiji and it aims to improve research and development, capacity building, market access initiatives, coconut farming, and value chains for the sector.
