Through the Farm Mechanisation Program, 30 farmers in Labasa will be able to increase their farming production, after they were given a tractor on Friday 2nd August, by the Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna.
“Rice cultivation must be strengthened as we continue to heavily depend on rice imports for consumption which now stands at $37.54 million in 2023. This dependency on rice not only strains our economy but also hinders the growth for you as farmers,” said Hon. Tunabuna.
“Today we support and recognise the efforts of 30 farmers in the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI) Labasa Branch, by providing them with a tractor and implements to elevate their farming programs. This tractor, which they helped to pay for, through their one third contribution, will increase productivity and assist in efforts to minimise reliance on imports which will pave the way for a successful and brighter future,” added Hon. Tunabuna.
73- year old Appna Murti from Coqeloa, is a sugar cane farmer who also plants rice to sustain his family. He is fully utilising his nine acres of land which includes assorted vegetables for his family’s livelihood.
“I want to thank government for this assistances to our farming group as this will enable us to increase our production and properly plan our work on the farm as land preparation is very important for a fruitful harvest, “smiled Mr Murti.
Similar sentiments were also echoed by former advisory councillor and veteran farmer Satyawan Reddy of Tabucola Tiri, who has been into rice farming for the last 15 years.
"I have seven acres of land and plant sugar cane, rice and vegetables for our daily consumption. We truly appreciate the assistance by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways as this will enable us to triple our production in the coming months,” said Mr Reddy.
During the handing over ceremony, the TISI Sangam also paid tribute to their senior citizens for their contribution to society.
“Today’s event is also to thank the elders for their invaluable contribution in lifting the standard of living from building homes to toiling the land. You have not only contributed to your families, but the nation as a whole,” added Hon. Tunabuna.
“Let us celebrate their wisdom, their contributions and their love. Remember that every wrinkle tells a story and every grey hair is a treasure stored with life lessons. Let’s celebrate them not only today but every day.”
More than 50 senior citizen of the TISI Sangam were recognised for their valuable contribution to society and the nation.
