Saint Vincent College is a rural co-educational school located about 15 kilometres from Korovou Town and sandwiched between Ratu Kadavulevu School and Queen Victoria School in Tailevu.
The school is situated uphill from the Natovi Jetty and has students from the 14 provinces of Fiji. The number of students in the hostel facility has always ranged from 100-150 every year.
They have 10 acres of land which is utilised for root crops and vegetable farming, which is targeted at meeting the nutritional needs of the students on a daily basis.
Yesterday, the school was honoured and grateful to receive their own tractor from the Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu.
Speaking to the teachers, school management and students during the handing over yesterday, Hon. Rayalu thanked them for their vision and foresight in acquiring assistance from the ministry.
“You fundraised and united together for the submission of one third of the total cost of the tractor whilst the ministry paid the other remaining costs. That shows commitment and perseverance towards a greater goal, and that is to increase your agricultural production,” said Hon. Rayalu.
“I sincerely thank you for showing resilience and of course to the Saint Vincent Parish for believing in the ultimate goal which is food security for the staff and students in the school,” added Hon. Rayalu.
Father Filimoni Vosabalavu thanked the ministry for the tremendous assistance and said that the tractor will surely address a few challenges with regards to land preparation and production.
“We are truly grateful to the ministry for the kind assistance and we are excited to elevate our farm production to another level. We will truly use this tractor to promote mechanised farming to our neighbouring communities and also encourage agricultural production,” said Father Vosabalavu.
Today, another tractor will be handed over to Natogadravu Village in Tailevu which was also made possible through the ministry’s Farm Mechanisation Program.
