RICE PLANTING GRANT PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN DREKETI

September 18, 2024

Today marked a significant milestone in the journey towards agricultural sustainability and food security in Fiji as Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu launched the new planting grant program that will play a pivotal role in transforming the rice industry.

Speaking to farmers and stakeholders today at the Fiji Rice Mill in Dreketi, Macuata, Hon. Rayalu said that Fiji has long faced challenges in achieving self-sufficiency in rice production.

“Despite the efforts and dedication of our local farmers, we currently import a substantial 88% of our rice, with an import bill reaching $42 million in 2022 alone. This heavy reliance on imports not only strains our economy but also underscores the urgent need for us to bolster our domestic rice production,” stressed Hon. Rayalu.

“In response to this need, I am thrilled to share that Fiji Rice Limited (FRL) has been awarded an additional $150,000 in grant funding for the 2024/2025 planting season. This grant represents a strategic investment aimed at increasing our rice production capacity and reducing our dependence on imported rice.”

“Last year, FRL received 1301 metric tonnes of paddy from our dedicated farmers. With this new funding, we are optimistic about a significant increase, with a target of an additional 480 tonnes of paddy.”

Hon. Rayalu added that the mission extends beyond merely increasing production.

“We understand that one of the biggest barriers to rice farming is the high cost of farm inputs. To address this, the grant will provide essential relief to both existing and new farmers by partially funding the cost of farm inputs. This support is designed to make rice farming more accessible and financially viable, encouraging more individuals to engage in this vital industry.”

As a condition of this grant, any farmer who receives assistance will be required to supply 80% their rice paddy to Fiji Rice Limited.

Hon. Rayalu added that this requirement is not just a condition but a crucial part of the strategy to enhance the availability and variety of locally produced rice in Fiji’s supermarkets.

“By ensuring that our local rice production is channelled through Fiji Rice, we can better manage the supply chain and ensure that a diverse range of rice products is available to consumers across the nation,” added Hon. Rayalu.

This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting farmers, fostering local production, and enhancing the overall agricultural landscape in Fiji.

Hon. Rayalu extended his gratitude to all those involved in making this grant program a reality, and to the farmers who continue to work tirelessly to feed our nation.

“Your dedication and hard work are the backbone of our agriculture sector, and with this support, we hope to build a more resilient and prosperous future for all.”

To apply for the grant, farmers will now be able to apply online or pick the forms from the Fiji Rice Mill offices in Dreketi and Labasa.
