September 17, 2024

The Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu encouraged staff serving in the Cakaudrove Province to be strategic thinkers in order for the agricultural sector to grow.

Starting his four days tour in the Northern Division today, Hon. Rayalu met with ministry staff at the Savusavu Office who gave a brief on the operations carried out in the province with regards to crop research, crop extension and animal health and production.

“I am grateful to you all for the services that you continue to provide and I want to encourage you to work closely with farmers and cluster groups in ensuring that we provide the services that they need in order for them to elevate their farming status,” said Hon. Rayalu.

“Go beyond routine tasks and consider how your actions fit into larger goals and strategies. Strategic thinking in this context could involve planning for long-term sustainability, anticipating future challenges, and making decisions that align with broader objectives for the province’s development,” added Hon. Rayalu.

Hon. Rayalu also added that addressing staffing issues is crucial, especially in a province where agriculture plays a significant role in the local economy. For Cakaudrove Province, most farmers primarily focus on dalo and yaqona.

“We need to refocus on crops like rice, cocoa, vanilla and of course strengthen copra farming as we have our very own Fiji Coconut Millers factory right here in Savusavu. We need to support our staff on the ground as this is essential for optimizing agricultural productivity and addressing the demands of a growing market.”

Sixteen officers look after farmers in 139 villages and 478 settlements in the Cakaudrove Province.

Hon. Rayalu encouraged the staff to continue serving and providing the best service to farmers and stakeholders.

After his meeting with staff, Hon. Rayalu visited the Agricultural Marketing Authority office, Kokomana Chocolate Facility, Greengold Kava and Fiji Coconut Millers to see the progress of works carried out.

“It is encouraging to see the progress of these small agro-processing facilities that are operating right here in Cakaudrove. We will continue to work with them with regards to supporting their operations as well as linking our farmers to meet the growing demand of their value added products.”

Tomorrow, the official entourage will visit rice fields in Dreketi where Hon. Rayalu will get a chance to talk with farmers to discuss their progress, plans and how to address their challenges.
