September 20, 2024

It was a joyous occasion today for members of the Raramavou Farmers Cooperative in Navonu Settlement, Cakaudrove after they received their brand new Solis Tractor with implements from the Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu.

During the handing over, Hon. Rayalu reminded them of the need for cooperation and unity amongst all members if any project is to succeed.

“The new tractor is sure to make a significant impact on your farming efforts and it is crucial that you work together to enhance productivity and ensure the success of your agricultural projects. Let us work together to ensure that land is maximised and that your farms thrive in every aspect,” advised Hon. Rayalu.

“Without working in unity, nothing will eventuate and you will face hardships in your journey towards alleviating poverty in your families and the village as a whole.”

Hon. Rayalu added that unity among farmers can be a powerful tool in combating poverty.

“When you collaborate, you can share resources, knowledge, and support, which can lead to better productivity and increased income. Additionally, working together allows you to advocate for your needs more effectively and access larger markets. This collective effort not only strengthens the community but also fosters resilience against challenges like climate change or market fluctuations.”

Miki Tamanivakabauta, a member of the Raramavou Farmers Cooperative thanked government for the drive and vision in assisting farmers through the various assistance programs.

“We are grateful and blessed to be assisted by the Coalition Government and we thank the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for giving us an opportunity to apply through the Farm Mechanisation Program. We secured a loan through the Fiji Development Bank for our one third contribution of around $15,000 and the Ministry paid the remainder of the costs,” smiled Mr. Tamanivakabauta.

“We have so much arable land and really needed a tractor to assist us in land preparation works. I am sure that this will also encourage our youths to utilise their land so that they too can contribute positively to their families.”

"There are 19 members in our cooperative and we hope to expand our membership in the coming weeks to other youths in the settlement."

“Engaging youth in agriculture can provide them with valuable skills and a sense of purpose. We want to strengthen our connection to the land and community and hope that this will be an avenue for our young people to find meaningful work that helps them contribute positively to their families and settlement.”

Hon. Rayalu challenged the youth of Navonu to explore the benefits of agriculture as it offers opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship, allowing them to explore new technologies and sustainable practices.

“Agriculture will not only empower you, but also help to combat social issues by fostering pride, responsibility, and a stronger sense of community. Supporting youth in agriculture is crucial for building a brighter future,” added Hon. Rayalu.

Representatives from the Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA) also shared their views on the market opportunities and the way forward for farmers.

Executive Chair for AMA, Mr. Jone Sovalawa advised farmers on the various produce that is currently being exported as well as the criteria that needs to be followed.

“We have an outlet right here in Savusavu and encourage farmers to please also visit our office to find out more about the services that we provide and the produce that we are buying,” added Mr. Sovalawa.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways is encouraging more youth involvement in agricultural activities and is calling on youths in Cakaudrove and across Fiji to visit the nearest agriculture station for more information and advice.
