The Central Division Drainage
Board received two new vehicles this afternoon which is a significant boost for
the essential drainage activities in the Central Division.
In handing over the vehicles, Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu said that the occasion represents a significant milestone in the Coalition Government’s commitment to strengthening the infrastructure and support systems essential for Fiji's agricultural sector's success.
“The Central Division Drainage Board plays a critical role in maintaining and improving drainage schemes across our central regions. These schemes are vital for protecting our non-sugarcane agricultural activities, housing subdivisions, farming settlements, and villages,” said Hon. Rayalu.
“As a government, we understand that the prosperity of our nation is closely tied to the health of our agricultural sector. This is why we prioritize investments in the infrastructure and support systems that will empower our farmers to reach their full potential. Providing these vehicles to the Central Division Drainage Board is a testament to our unwavering commitment to this cause.”
“Through strategic investments, innovative policies, and collaborative partnerships, we will ensure that our agricultural sector continues to be the backbone of our economy, providing food security, employment opportunities, and sustainable livelihoods for generations to come,” added Hon. Rayalu.
He also thanked the dedication and tireless efforts of the Board's technical staff and says that farming communities will be better shielded from saltwater intrusion, empowered to enhance soil conditions, and protected from the devastating impacts of flooding.
“These new vehicles will enhance the Board's capacity to address the challenges in our drainage systems effectively.”
Hon. Rayalu also emphasized the importance of infrastructural development, noting that many existing structures date back to the 1960s and are in dire need of upgrades and replacements.
“This is just the beginning and we will continue to work closely with the three drainage boards that are now operating in the Central, Western and Northern Divisions especially with regards to upgrading and maintaining the infrastructure that is in place.”
Central Division Drainage Board member, Satish Kumar stated that work programs have been established to address the ongoing challenges in the division.
This enhancement in mobility will support their efforts in maintaining and improving the drainage systems that are crucial for the community's wellbeing and of course for agriculture to thrive.
