"Food Safety is Everyone’s Business"

June 9, 2020

Food safety remains everyone’s business and the current global crisis amply demonstrates this more than ever.

This was highlighted by the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture Mr. Ritesh Dass while officiating at the World Food Safety Day celebration at the Ministry of Agriculture Headquarters yesterday.

He said the celebration was dedicated to all those that have ensured the crisis had not interrupted supply chains and that safe food remained available, contributing to the consumption of healthy diets from the workers in the fields to those in the supermarkets and those preparing food for others and themselves.

With the theme “Food Safety, in the “New Normal”, the World Food Safety Day brings awareness to inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage food borne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development.

He also highlighted Food safety was a shared responsibility between governments, producers and consumers; and that everybody had a role to play from the farm to the table, to ensure the food we consume is edible and safe.

“Through the World Food Safety Day, World Health Organisation (WHO) pursues its efforts to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally.”

He said the Ministry would continue to work with the National Codex Committee to adhere to the Codex standards in the Food System.

The National Codex Committee was established and approved by Cabinet in 2005 to look into food safety matters, the entire food pathway from production to consumption.
