FARMER ADVISORY – TROPICAL DEPRESSION 09F

February 23, 2025

The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways urges all farmers to implement preventative measures to mitigate risks to life and property, given that Tropical Depression 09F, situated Northeast of Fiji, is expected to strengthen into a tropical cyclone by this evening.

The Fiji Meteorological Services has issued a gale warning for the Eastern parts of Vanua Levu including Eastern Macuata and Eastern Cakaudrove, Cikobia, Naqele Levu, Taveuni, and Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

A strong wind warning remains in force for the rest of Vanua Levu, Northeastern parts of Viti Levu from Tailevu North through Rakiraki up to Tavua, Yasawa, Mamanuca, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti groups. A heavy rain alert remains in force for the rest of Fiji.

Farmers in the identified areas are advised to take immediate precautions and make the necessary preparatory arrangements to minimize damage to crops and livestock.

Farmers living in flood prone areas are advised to move their livestock to higher grounds. Farmers are also advised to salvage much of the crops from the flood prone areas. Secure your planting materials and store them safely so you can use them after the floodwaters have receded.

Farmers should move their farm machinery and implements away from flood-prone areas and secure their livestock sheds.

Farmers should keep monitoring their crops and farmland in flood-prone areas to prevent losses once the water has receded.

Farmers also have to be wary of culverts and other waterways created by floods and keep family members and animals away from them.

It is prudent that farmers pay close attention to all weather forecasts, warnings, and advisories issued by the Fiji Meteorological Services. The Ministry also advises that farmers take precautionary measures to minimize and, if possible, avoid losses from strong winds and flash floods.

Please avoid crossing flooded rivers, creeks and drains.
