RESEARCHERS AND STAKEHOLDERS MEET TO REVIEW AGRICULTURE RESEARCH PROGRAMMES

February 26, 2025

Research plays a critical role in improving food security, resilience, long-term sustainability, and inclusive agricultural development.

This was highlighted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Deputy Secretary Agriculture Development, Dr Tekini Nakidakida, while addressing the participants at the opening of the three-day forum on Review of Agriculture Research Programmes held at the Koronivia Research Station today.

He mentioned that prioritizing research that is relevant to local needs and rooted in the real challenges faced by the farmers will create a more thriving and sustainable agriculture sector.

“Agricultural research, through the innovative application of science and technology, offers the potential to improve productivity, sustainability, and resilience within the agricultural sector, as we know. It provides solutions to pressing issues in food production, crop protection, resource management, and climate adaptation,” said Dr Nakidakida.

He stressed that identifying and prioritizing research topics, addressing the most pressing agricultural challenges and aligning them with national priorities, is crucial.

“Our nation is blessed with rich natural resources and a favourable climate for cultivating many tropical crops and relies heavily on agriculture for food and income security. It is understood that agriculture faces numerous challenges such as climate change, shifting market demands, aging farmers, lack of farm labourers, and limited technological advancement.”

“As we reflect on agricultural development in the country, it is important to focus on the role of agriculture research and how its innovative and strategic directions can ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for the sector,” he added.

He said it would not have been a better time than now to undertake a review of our agriculture research programs and activities. Some areas that need focused attention include: -

·        Climate resilient and crop development

·        Soil Health and sustainable agriculture practices

·        Postharvest and value addition

·        Pest and Disease Management

·        Market Facilitation

·        Provision of high-quality scientific services

·        Knowledge sharing and education

·        Policy and administration support

·        Collaborations and Partnerships

He said the future of agriculture in Fiji depends on the strength and relevance of the agriculture research programmes.

“Agriculture is not just an industry for Fiji, it is a way of life. It is a key part of our identity, our culture, and our economy. As we continue to adapt to global challenges, we must remember that the solutions lie within our reach — through innovation, collaboration, and investment in agriculture research.”

Dr Nakidakida acknowledged key stakeholders and researchers for their presence and contributions to assist the Ministry in undertaking a review of its current agriculture research programmes and activities.

The forum is attended by representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Strategic Planning, National Planning & Development, Ministry of Sugar, Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Agro Marketing Authority, and Food Processors Ltd.
