Farmers of the district of Nasau in Ra are currently attending a training session that emphasizes the importance of cultivating both improved and traditional dalo varieties.
This three-days training is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable agriculture and improve food security in the region.
Senior Technical Assistant Sera Nailia one of the facilitators at the training said that the subjects covered, will focus on the benefits of planting a diverse range of dalo types.
“By incorporating both improved and primitive varieties, farmers can enhance their crop resilience, optimize yields, and maintain local agricultural heritage,” she said.
A key theme was the significance of genetic diversity in crop production. Farmers learned that cultivating a mix of improved and traditional dalo varieties can reduce susceptibility to pests, diseases, and environmental changes.
"Genetic diversity in crops is essential for building resilience and ensuring long-term sustainability," emphasized Ms. Nailia.
"Improved dalo varieties offer significant advantages in terms of yield and crop health therefore introducing latest advancements in dalo breeding and how these varieties can boost productivity to farmers during this training is important,” she said.
"These varieties are well-adapted to local conditions and have unique flavours that are cherished by the community. Farmers were encouraged to preserve and cultivate these varieties to maintain biodiversity and cultural heritage."
“For Nasau dalo farmers, diversifying dalo varieties is crucial due to the region's unique climate and soil conditions. By cultivating both improved and traditional varieties, farmers can better adapt to varying environmental factors and mitigate risks associated with pests and diseases,” she added.
The training includes best practices for soil preparation, planting techniques, and crop management. Sustainable farming practices were also emphasized, combining traditional knowledge with modern agricultural techniques.
