March 8, 2025

Yesterday was the final day of the National Women in Agriculture Symposium where around 100 women representatives from the 14 provinces across Fiji visited the Koronivia Research Station.

They undertook basic lessons on the production of jam, chili sauce, and tamarind chutney as well as flower arrangements.

They also had the opportunity of learning more about the various units at the Koronivia Research Station and the roles they each play.

39-year old Subashni Devi from Tavua said that she learnt a lot of new things and as a full time vegetable farmer, visiting the research station has opened her eyes to the endless opportunities available especially in value addition.

“I am so thankful to the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for inviting me to part of this two--days symposium and I have certainly learnt a lot. I will return to my community and surely pass on the knowledge to fellow women farmers,” she smiled.

The Ministry will continue to acknowledge the significant contributions of women in agriculture, who represent 14% of our farmers. Annual events, such as International Women's Day, can be utilized by the Ministry to highlight, support, and recognize the essential roles women play in the agricultural industry.

In an inspiring commitment to closing the gender gap in agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture & Waterways organised the two days symposium in collaboration with World Bank, UN Women, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO), Fiji Development Bank and other development partners.

Acting Chief Economist for the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Ms Sainiana Kirisitiana said that event aimed to recognize and celebrate the vital contributions of women in the sector and the economy, empowering women farmers economically, promoting gender equality, and strengthening women's resilience against external challenges.

“The symposium has been a success and we want to thank all those that attended the two days sessions. We also want to wish all women farmers across the country a Happy International Women’s Day and want to encourage them to continue to strive to provide for their families and also contribute positively to the agricultural sector in the country, ”added Ms Kirisitiana.
