March 23, 2025

Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, recently visited the Mua Research Station in Taveuni to receive an update on the progress of the Coconut Development Programs.

The Officer in Charge, Mr. Semisi Tuikilakila, provided a detailed overview of the developments taking place at the station, as well as the challenges the staff face on a daily basis.

Mr. Tuikilakila shared that the station is currently breeding 13 coconut varieties, with additional breeds being tested to ensure better economic returns.

"I have been on the island since 2014 and have witnessed the progress being made here at the station. Coconut is a valuable commodity, as all parts of the coconut are useful, and nothing goes to waste," he said.

He further emphasized the station's primary role in breeding coconut varieties to meet the demands of various geographical divisions.

"Our main goal here is to breed as many varieties as possible to meet the needs of different regions," Mr. Tuikilakila added. The staff are actively involved in pollinating coconuts on the farm to ensure the breeding process is successful.

During his visit, Hon. Tunabuna expressed his sincere gratitude to the staff for their unwavering dedication and hard work.

"We deeply appreciate you and your families for your tireless efforts in carrying out your roles and duties. This station is incredibly important as it plays a vital role in raising and breeding coconut seedlings for the benefit of all," he stated.

A key concern raised by Hon. Tunabuna was the absence of sheep grazing at the research station, a practice that was introduced to help maintain the undergrowth and improve the station's resilience to different climatic conditions. He emphasized the importance of reinstating this practice to help sustain the station's operations.

Hon. Tunabuna concluded his tour of the station and continued his visit to other locations on the mainland for further engagements.
