Narsaiya Chetty Naidu’s passion for livestock farming has been a lifelong journey, deeply rooted in his upbringing.
Growing up in Nuku Estate in the Vaturova District with parents who were dedicated to agricultural life, it was no surprise that he would eventually follow in their footsteps.
In 1994, Narsaya began his own farming venture, focusing on livestock. Though he sought opportunities abroad, his heart never strayed far from the farm.
Despite the challenges that come with farming, Mr. Naidu has remained committed to raising sheep, goats, pigs, ducks and other livestock, believing in the importance of sustaining the practice for both personal fulfilment and the contribution it makes to his community.
His experiences in farming have given him valuable insights into the industry, from animal husbandry to land management, and he's become a respected figure in his community for his dedication to livestock farming.
As a seasoned farmer, Narsaya also recognizes the importance of adapting to modern techniques while maintaining traditional values. He continues to explore ways to improve his farming practices, whether through new technologies, sustainable practices, or networking with other farmers.
He has goals in the near future and that is to increase his stock and ultimately improving the standard of living for his family using income generated from the farm.
He was assisted in the 2022-2023 financial year under the Commercial Agricultural Development Program (CADP) with goat shed materials and later on with a sheep package initiative.
In visiting his farm today, Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu, commended Mr. Naidu for his dedication and resilience in the livestock farming sector.
Hon. Rayalu took the opportunity to witness first-hand the progress of his farm and understand the challenges he faces as a farmer with decades of experience.
During the visit, Hon. Rayalu praised the hardworking farmer for his ability to balance traditional farming methods with modern practices, highlighting how his farm serves as a great example for other farmers in the region.
Hon. Rayalu also discussed the importance of supporting long-term farmers like Mr. Naidu whose knowledge and commitment contribute significantly to the local agricultural industry.
Hon. Rayalu also emphasized the government's ongoing efforts to provide assistance to farmers, particularly through initiatives that aim to enhance livestock farming, improve sustainability, and promote economic growth in rural communities.
He assured Mr. Naidu that the
government remains committed to providing the necessary resources, training,
and support to help farmers like him thrive and continue contributing to Fiji's
agricultural sector.
Hon. Rayalu also expressed his hope that Mr. Naidu’s story would inspire younger generations to consider a future in agriculture and farming, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a strong connection to the land and continuing to build sustainable, profitable farming ventures.
Last community visited today was the Lisiaseru Settlement in the District of Navatu where the Kecesimani Women's Church Group were potting soil for the Wainigata Research Station.
This will be used for native and exotic trees to be grown at the research station.
Hon. Rayalu thanked the group for their dedication and attention to detail which will assist in the success of the Wainigata Research Station’s tree planting initiative.
He expressed his appreciation for the Kecesimani Women's Church Group’s hard work in preparing the potting soil, which plays a crucial role in ensuring the healthy growth of both native and exotic tree species at the research station.
He acknowledged that the group’s involvement not only contributes to the success of the research station but also helps to foster a strong sense of community engagement and environmental stewardship.
Hon. Rayalu further emphasized the significant role that local communities, especially women’s groups, can play in contributing to national goals.
The visit ended with a heartfelt thank you to the Kecesimani Women's Church Group for their dedication and collaboration in such an important project.
