April 7, 2025

Today marks an important milestone as the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) was officially handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways.

Ms. Laisa Bolalevu, Director Monitoring from the Department of Public Enterprises, formally officiated the handover to Dr. Andrew Tukana, Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways.

Dr. Tukana highlighted the vital role of BAF in safeguarding Fiji’s biodiversity and acknowledged its continued value to the nation.

He warmly welcomed this transition on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture and Waterways.

“We look forward to working closely with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji to strengthen our efforts in protecting Fiji’s agriculture and natural resources,” said Dr Tukana.

The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji’s reorganization was approved by Cabinet on January 21, 2025.

This move is expected to result in a better utilization of Fiji's agricultural resources, improved responses to outbreaks with better stakeholder collaboration, better accountability, to facilitate agriculture trade and stronger leadership.
