CHINA AND FIJI TO EXPAND AGRICULTURAL COOPERATION

April 8, 2025

The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways, Dr. Andrew Tukana, and the Deputy Secretary for Agriculture Development, Dr. Tekini Nakidakida, today received a courtesy visit from Fiji’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Robert Lee.

This meeting was a follow-up to the Hon. Prime Minister’s official visit to China in August 2024.

In light of China’s successful poverty eradication strategies, the Embassy of the Republic of Fiji in China, in collaboration with the Centre for International Knowledge on Development (CIKD), is working towards developing a tailored and practical framework to combat poverty in Fiji.

 Key discussion points included:

·         Expanding kava exports to China, specifically for extract production.

·        Identifying potential export crops or value-added products suited to China’s market, considering shipping timelines and shelf life.

·          Strengthening market mechanisms to support Fiji’s poverty alleviation efforts.

·      Opportunities through the China-Pacific Island Countries Agriculture Cooperation Demonstration Centre in Nanjing, which will focus on identifying suitable crops for collaboration

·          Exploring market opportunities for mushrooms

These collaborative efforts aim to foster stronger bilateral ties and contribute to the sustainable development of Fiji’s agricultural and rural communities.
