May 8, 2025

The Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, met with the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, during an important visit to the paramount chief of Bua, Ra Makutu Nagagavoka to discuss the way forward for agricultural development in Fiji’s Northern Division.

At the heart of the discussions was the inclusion and empowerment of Bua farmers, particularly in livestock and crop production.

Recognizing the critical role of farmers in the agricultural sector, Hon. Tunabuna and President Lalabalavu engaged in meaningful dialogue with local farmers to understand their challenges and explore growth opportunities.

Hon. Tunabuna reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening food security, expanding access to essential agricultural resources, and equipping farmers with innovative tools and knowledge to elevate their livelihoods.

His discussions with President Lalabalavu underscored the collaborative effort needed to propel Fiji’s agricultural industry into a more sustainable and resilient future.

“Our farmers are the backbone of our agricultural sector, and ensuring their inclusion in strategic discussions is key to our success,” said Hon. Tunabuna.

“By prioritizing livestock and crop development, especially here in the Northern Division, we are taking the necessary steps to modernize farming practices, improve productivity, and create lasting economic opportunities for rural communities.”

The dialogue also highlighted Fiji’s investment in climate-smart agriculture, addressing the pressing need for sustainable farming techniques amid environmental challenges.

Ensuring the long-term viability of the sector remains a priority, as leaders work towards developing strategies that empower local farmers while preserving natural resources.

This commitment aligns with Fiji’s broader national agricultural strategy, which prioritizes modernization, innovation, and collaboration with stakeholders to achieve long-term progress.

Both Hon. Tunabuna and the President, Ratu Naiqama expressed optimism that their discussions, rooted in farmer inclusivity—would translate into actionable measures that drive agricultural prosperity and community empowerment across Bua and the Northern Division.

The meeting signals an important milestone in the government’s vision for agricultural growth. As Fiji continues to embrace innovation and sustainability, partnerships between national leaders and farming communities remain instrumental in shaping the industry's future.
