The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, through the Batiri Research Station, successfully facilitated the sale of 70 genetically improved sheep to 51 farmers across Taveuni, Macuata, Cakaudrove, and Bua as part of an initiative aimed at enhancing livestock genetics and improving farm productivity.
The one-day program, focused on strengthening on-farm genetics to support sustainable sheep farming and increase livestock quality, resilience, and market value.
The sold sheep—a crossbreed of Fiji Fantastic and Dorper—offer superior breeding stock designed to enhance growth rates, adaptability, and meat quality, providing farmers with valuable assets to elevate their herds.
Sheep farming plays a critical role in Fiji’s agricultural sector, contributing to food security, economic development, and rural livelihoods.
The Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening sheep farming in Northern Fiji.
"Sheep farming in the Northern Division has immense untapped potential. Investing in genetic improvements is not just about upgrading livestock—it’s about building a sustainable industry that provides food security, supports farmers’ livelihoods, and drives economic growth in rural communities,” he said.
Agriculture Officer (Sheep-Research) Salesh Chandra said, "Genetic improvements are key to boosting production and ensuring farmers achieve higher yields and better quality livestock.”
“This program allows farmers to invest in improved breeding stock that will enhance the profitability and sustainability of their farms," he said.
“By integrating advanced genetics, farmers can increase herd efficiency, improve breeding cycles, and expand market access, ensuring long-term sustainability and profitability.”
The 51 participating farmers welcomed the opportunity to purchase superior breeding stock, recognizing the benefits of genetic improvements in meat production, herd expansion, and resilience to environmental challenges.
The program aligns with national efforts to advance livestock genetics, ensuring that farmers have the necessary support, training, and breeding resources to strengthen Fiji’s sheep farming industry.
The successful sale of Fiji Fantastic-Dorper crossbreed sheep underscores the ministry's commitment to livestock excellence, equipping farmers with the tools, knowledge, and genetics needed to drive stronger, more competitive sheep farming operations across the Northern Division.
