May 10, 2025

The Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, joined community leaders, farmers, and descendants of Girmitiyas at the 146th Girmit Commemoration at Subrails Park, Labasa, reflecting on the foundational role of agriculture and waterways in Fiji’s economic and cultural history.

With the theme “Preserving the Past, Envisioning the Future,” the commemoration paid tribute to the resilience and contributions of Girmitiyas, whose pioneering efforts in land cultivation, sustainable farming, and water resource management shaped the agricultural sector that continues to sustain communities today.

Hon. Tunabuna acknowledged that Fiji’s agricultural and waterways systems stand as living legacies of Girmitiyas innovation, with their early irrigation techniques, land preparation practices, and commitment to agricultural self-sufficiency forming the backbone of modern farming methods.

"Their dedication to food production and water conservation remains integral to national development, ensuring that current and future generations build upon their knowledge to strengthen Fiji’s agricultural resilience," said Hon. Tunabuna.

The commemoration also reinforced the importance of preserving land and water resources, aligning with the ministry’s ongoing initiatives to empower rural farmers, protect waterways, and enhance irrigation infrastructure.

"As Fiji moves forward, investment in climate-smart agriculture, water conservation techniques, and sustainable land management will be crucial in ensuring long-term food security and economic prosperity."

Officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting rural agricultural communities, recognizing that by safeguarding Fiji’s waterways and strengthening agricultural systems, farmers can continue the legacy of Girmitiyas while advancing modern, sustainable farming practices.

The 146th Girmit Commemoration stands as a powerful reminder of how history, agriculture, and waterways are deeply intertwined, ensuring that Fiji’s farming communities remain strong, resilient, and prepared for the future.
