CONCERTED EFFORTS BY MINISTRY AND BAF TO SUPPRESS FALL ARMYWORM INFESTATION IN NADI AND SIGATOKA

May 16, 2025

The Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, was briefed today by the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) on the recent armyworm outbreak affecting farms across Nadi and Sigatoka.

The briefing provided an update on containment efforts, highlighting the government’s swift response to mitigate crop damage and protect food security.

The Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), an invasive pest known for its rapid spread and destructive feeding habits, has been detected in maize crops posing a serious threat to agricultural production.

In response, 40 officers have been mobilized across affected areas, forming six teams dedicated to surveillance and awareness efforts and four teams carrying out treatment measures to limit the spread of the pest.

Speaking to officers engaged in the operation, Hon. Tunabuna commended their dedication and stressed the importance of coordinated action to protect farmers and food supply chains.

"This outbreak is a serious concern, but I am confident in the expertise and commitment of our biosecurity teams. Farmers must remain vigilant, report infestations, and follow recommended pest management strategies. The Ministry is working closely with BAF to ensure swift containment and long-term solutions," said Hon. Tunabuna.

BAF Operations Manager Walesi Vulaono updated the containment measures, urging farmers to monitor their crops closely and take immediate action if signs of infestation appear.

"We have deployed emergency response teams across affected areas, conducting field surveillance and implementing control measures. Farmers should look for signs such as leaf damage, larvae feeding, and stunted plant growth. Early detection and intervention are key to minimizing losses," said Vulaono.

The Ministry of Agriculture and BAF are working together to guide farmers on pest control, including biological solutions, targeted pesticide applications, and improved crop management techniques.

Officials are also urging farmers to report suspected armyworm sightings to the BAF helpline at 5994 or their nearest Ministry of Agriculture office.

The government remains committed to safeguarding Fiji’s agricultural sector, ensuring that farmers receive timely support, technical assistance, and effective pest management strategies to combat the armyworm outbreak.
