Keeping our borders safe from pests and diseases is essential to protecting Fiji’s agriculture.
These were the remarks by the Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu, during a briefing held this afternoon with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF).
The briefing focused on the recent detection and response to the Fall Armyworm, an invasive pest that poses a serious threat to the country’s food security and agricultural production.
During the briefing, officials from BAF provided an update on the joint surveillance and containment efforts currently underway.
Through collaborative efforts, officials from BAF and the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways have been actively monitoring fields, conducting risk assessments, and engaging with farmers to mitigate the spread of the pest.
Hon. Rayalu reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening Fiji’s biosecurity systems, emphasizing that proactive measures are critical to safeguard livelihoods and the economy.
“Our farmers rely on healthy crops for their income, and the nation depends on agriculture for food security. That’s why it's our duty to be vigilant and act swiftly against any biosecurity threats,” he said.
The Fall Armyworm, which was first reported in Fiji last month, has triggered a multi-agency response.
Awareness campaigns, early detection programs, and technical support for affected farmers are being prioritized to contain the infestation.
BAF Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Surend Pratap, noted that community engagement is key to controlling the spread.
“We urge all stakeholders, particularly our farming communities, to report any signs of infestation and to follow the guidelines provided by our officers,” he stated.
The Ministry of Agriculture and BAF continue to work closely with regional and international partners to implement best practices and leverage expertise in pest management.
The ministry assures the public that all necessary steps are being taken to protect Fiji’s agricultural assets and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
