ASSISTANT MINISTER HANDS OVER YAQONA POUNDING MACHINE TO SUPPORT RURAL AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

May 16, 2025

In a significant boost for rural agricultural development, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, officially handed over a yaqona pounding machine to the Varauno Investment in Bukuya, Magodro, Ba.

The initiative marks a milestone under the ministry’s Yaqona Development Program, aimed at empowering farmers in the interior by reducing processing costs and improving efficiency.

It aligns with the Fijian Government’s vision of fostering sustainable and inclusive agricultural growth, ensuring rural communities have the resources and support to thrive in an evolving economic landscape.

For years, farmers in Bukuya and surrounding villages have relied on transporting their yaqona to town for pounding, incurring high costs in the process.

With the newly provided pounding machine—valued at $6,000—these farmers can now process their yaqona locally, saving money and time while increasing productivity.

The move supports the government’s commitment to strengthening rural economies and fostering sustainable agricultural practices.

Hon. Tunabuna highlighted the importance of providing practical solutions that ease the challenges faced by farmers in remote communities while reinforcing the government's long-term goal of empowering local producers and enhancing food security.

"This initiative is about ensuring our farmers in the interior have the resources they need to thrive," said Hon. Tunabuna.

"The provision of this pounding machine will not only reduce costs but also enhance the efficiency of yaqona processing, enabling farmers to focus on improving yields and expanding their market reach. It is a step forward in our commitment to sustainable rural development, ensuring that every farmer has the tools to succeed."

Farmers and community members expressed their gratitude to the ministry for recognizing the need to improve local processing capabilities.

Varauno Investment representative Alumita Varauno Ciwanacagi shared appreciation, emphasizing how the machine will support their farming operations.

"We sincerely thank the Ministry for looking at ways to expand development in rural farming communities. This machine allows us to process our yaqona here at home, without needing to make costly trips to town," she said.

"It is a step forward for us in terms of both convenience and economic progress."

The handover follows a recent training program on yaqona held in Bukuya village, equipping farmers with knowledge on best practices and sustainable agricultural methods.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers through training, equipment provision, and innovative solutions that strengthen Fiji’s agricultural sector while ensuring alignment with national development objectives.

The Yaqona Development Program continues to play a vital role in advancing the country’s agricultural agenda, ensuring rural communities have the tools and resources to grow their businesses, contribute to national food security, and align with the Government’s broader vision for a resilient and thriving agricultural industry.
