May 20, 2025

Fiji now assumes the chairmanship of the IAEA Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology for Asia and the Pacific region better known as RCA.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways Director of Research, Dr. Shalendra Prasad extended his sincere gratitude to all Member States for their confidence and support.

“The RCA stands as a shining example of how regional cooperation can enhance the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology, with direct benefits to the health, safety, environment, and prosperity of our people. Over the years, the RCA has contributed meaningfully to capacity building, knowledge sharing, and the implementation of impactful projects across agriculture, human health, water and environment, industrial applications, and nuclear safety,” said Dr. Prasad.

“As we look ahead, our collective mission is more important than ever. The Asia-Pacific region continues to face complex and evolving challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, the increasing demand for clean energy, and emerging public health threats. These issues require not only technical solutions but also a united regional approach that builds on our shared knowledge and resources.”

“As Chair, I will work closely with all of you to advance three key priorities:

?To strengthen inclusivity and engagement among all Member States, ensuring that even the smallest among us can fully benefit from and contribute to RCA initiatives. I call upon our Pacific Island Country observers to please take note of the meeting deliberations and encourage you to join this community for the benefit of your country.

?To enhance the visibility and impact of RCA projects by improving outreach, reporting, and alignment with global development frameworks, particularly the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

?To deepen our collaboration with the IAEA and other regional and international partners to maximize the value of our collective efforts.

Dr. Prasad added that Fiji is committed to transparent, inclusive leadership, and to facilitating an environment where open dialogue, mutual respect, and shared responsibility drive our decisions.

“Together, we will continue to uphold the RCA’s legacy while evolving to meet the demands of a changing world.”

He encouraged representatives to move forward with renewed commitment and confidence and that through science, cooperation, and unity, member countries can build a safer, healthier, and more resilient region for all.
