The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways has officially launched Fiji’s Non-Sugar Agriculture Sector Policy 2025–2035 at New Valley Processors in Sabeto, marking a defining moment in the country’s agricultural and economic development.
Speaking at the launch yesterday, the Acting Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Hon. Alitia Bainivalu, expressed gratitude to development partners for their instrumental role in creating the policy.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the European Union for its incredible support through the provision of Technical Assistance under the Sustainable Rural Livelihoods Programme, which has been instrumental in shaping the Fiji Non-Sugar Agriculture Policy for 2025–2035,” she said.
Hon. Bainivalu extended special thanks to Her Excellency Barbara Plinkert, saying, “Her invaluable technical expertise and collaborative partnership were instrumental in empowering our Policy Team and bringing this Policy to fruition.”
In her keynote address, the Minister described the policy as “a roadmap, a bold vision that will steer our agricultural sector towards lasting food security, resilience in the face of global change, and shared prosperity for every Fijian.
“Agriculture is central to Fiji’s identity and sustains its people and traditions. However, to remain resilient amidst rapid global changes, the nation must adapt and innovate collectively.”
The launch also paid tribute to the late Hon. Vatimi Rayalu. “We honour the late Hon. Vatimi Rayalu by carrying forward his visionary legacy and deep commitment to agriculture as the foundation of Fiji’s rural life, economy, and national development,” Hon Bainivalu said.
The Minister noted that the policy is the result of extensive consultations with farmers, experts, and stakeholders.
“The result is a comprehensive strategy built on four key pillars,” she said, highlighting priorities such as strengthening food security, empowering farmers and youth, fostering public-private partnerships, and investing in agricultural research and innovation.
“To our farmers gathered here tonight, you are not alone. We stand with you. To our women and youths, your creativity and energy will define the future of our agriculture sector. To our private-sector partners, your investment and expertise will unlock new markets and transform supply chains.”
The policy lays out strategic priorities including increasing market opportunities, boosting agricultural productivity, promoting climate resilience, and addressing food security challenges.
Hon. Bainivalu further explained, “The policy is anchored on ten thematic areas” covering everything from soil and water sustainability to innovation, education, social inclusion, and stakeholder participation.
“A well-crafted policy holds value only when effectively implemented, making execution the ultimate test,” she stated.
“We remain committed to accountability, ensuring this Policy delivers tangible benefits to farmers, communities, and all Fijian citizens.”
With the launch of the Fiji Non-Sugar Agriculture Sector Policy for 2025 to 2035, all stakeholders are invited to stand together in cultivating this vision and building a food-secure, innovative, and inclusive future for every Fijian.
