Quietly but determinedly, the Yaukawa Cluster Farmers Group has been making a big impact from their base in Bureiwai, Ra.
Comprising 13 hardworking members—10 men and three women—the group originates from Soa Village but began their farming journey in Bureiwai, where two of their members reside.
With a shared vision and strong community spirit, they are focused on one goal: proving that success doesn't require leaving Fiji.
Instead of seeking opportunities overseas under schemes like the National Employment Centre (NEC), the group is determined to create those same opportunities right here at home.
They cultivate a variety of vegetables including cucumber, tomatoes, Chinese cabbage, long beans, chillies, and sweet corn. Their journey started with long beans and chillies—crops that helped them generate enough income to purchase a second-hand digger and a twin cab vehicle to transport their produce to local markets each week.
Their success is not just seen in equipment and produce, but in people. Members are paid weekly, with earnings steadily increasing—from $100 per member initially, to $130, and now $160. Their goal is to reach $200 per week per member by the end of August, and $600 weekly by December.
Two members play key roles in the operation—one as a digger operator, and another handling transport and market scouting. The group also has its sights set on buying a new digger to boost efficiency and productivity.
Above all, the Yaukawa Cluster hopes to inspire other young people in Fiji. Their message is clear: you don’t have to toil the land abroad to build a better future—you can do it right here at home. With dedication, teamwork, and vision, they are not only transforming their own lives but planting the seeds of change for others to follow.
