In a remarkable display of international collaboration, U.S. Army veterinarians joined the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways and Fijian farmers at the Small Ruminant Farming Practices Field Day at the Nawaicoba Research Station in Nadi today.
Their participation, under the Pacific Partnership 2025, reinforced the shared commitment between Fiji and the United States to advancing agricultural resilience and food security.
The event, hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, provided farmers from the Central and Western Divisions with hands-on training in sheep and goat husbandry, disease prevention, and sustainable livestock management.
The presence of U.S. Army veterinary specialists brought additional expertise, offering farmers practical solutions to improve animal health and productivity.
"This partnership reflects the strength of Fiji and the United States working together to build a more resilient agricultural sector," said Hon. Tomasi Tunabuna, Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways.
"The knowledge shared today will empower our farmers to improve livestock management, reduce losses, and enhance food security for our communities."
The 72nd Medical Detachment, Veterinary Service Support (MDVSS), U.S. Navy, played a key role in the training, sharing insights on nutrition, disease control, and breeding techniques. Captain Levi Jackson emphasized the importance of capacity-building in livestock management.
"Small ruminant farming is a vital component of food security, and empowering farmers with the right knowledge ensures long-term sustainability," said Captain Jackson.
"We are honored to be here, working alongside Fijian farmers, learning from them, and sharing best practices that can strengthen livestock health and productivity."
The Pacific Partnership 2025 mission continues to foster regional cooperation, enhancing disaster preparedness, agricultural resilience, and veterinary support across the Indo-Pacific.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways remains committed to strengthening Fiji’s livestock industry, ensuring farmers have the tools and expertise needed to thrive.
