In a moving and traditional expression of respect, the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways gathered to present its ireguregu for the late Honourable Minister Vatimi Rayalu, a leader whose quiet strength, unwavering service, and enduring legacy have left a deep imprint on all who knew and worked alongside him.
The Ministerial ireguregu, led by the Honourable Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Tomasi Tunabuna, brought together a solemn delegation comprised of the Permanent Secretary, ministry leadership, stakeholders, and staff from all agricultural stations of the country.
Representatives traveled from near and far to be present for this tribute, underscoring the widespread admiration held for the late Minister across Fiji’s agricultural communities.
Held in keeping with traditional Fijian customs, the ireguregu served as a formal presentation of condolences from the Ministry to the late Minister’s family, signifying not only institutional mourning but a cultural and communal act of reverence.
The presence of so many staff, including field officers and senior officials alike, was a powerful testament to the values that Hon. Rayalu instilled throughout the Ministry.
Known for his gentle leadership style and thoughtful guidance, he led with humility and a steadfast belief in the potential of agriculture to uplift communities and ensure national resilience.
Many who attended the ireguregu carried with them memories of his personal visits to their regions, his encouragement of local innovation, and his tireless advocacy for rural development.
This tribute was more than a farewell; it was a demonstration of unity.
As Hon. Tunabuna and ministry representatives knelt in ceremony, they carried with them the hopes and grief of hundreds who could not attend, including those continuing daily operations in the spirit of service the late Minister championed.
The late Minister Rayalu’s legacy lies not only in policy but in people, those he mentored, inspired, and led with care.
His passion for the land and its caretakers, his devotion to inclusive progress, and his deep faith in the potential of Fijian farmers remain a guiding light. Through this ireguregu, the Ministry affirmed that though he may no longer walk among us, his vision remains.
As the week continues and the final farewell approaches, the echoes of the ireguregu linger as both a tribute and a promise, that the work he began will be carried forward with the same sense of dignity and purpose that defined his life of service.
