REMEMBERING A CHAMPION FOR AGRICULTURE IN FIJI

June 21, 2025

Hundreds filled the FMF Gymnasium in Laucala Bay yesterday to farewell the late Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu.
Members of Cabinet, Parliament, and the Diplomatic Corps, government officials, Non-Government organisations representatives, stakeholders, farmers, relatives and friends filled the seats to pay their last respects to a noble leader.
In delivering the eulogy, the Prime Minister of Fiji, Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka, paid tribute to the late Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Vatimi Rayalu, acknowledging his unwavering dedication to public service and his deep commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Fijians.
“The loss of a leader of his calibre is not only a sorrow to those closest to him, but a loss to the institutions he served, the communities he touched, and the future he worked so faithfully to secure for our people,” said Hon. Rabuka.
“From his earliest days in public service, it was clear that Vatimi Rayalu did not view his work as just a job. He saw it as a calling. His career was marked by a steady and admirable rise—always driven by merit, dedication, and humility.”
“On December 24th, 2022, Vatimi Rayalu was appointed Minister for Agriculture and Waterways. From the very first day, he understood the depth of responsibility that came with that role. He brought not only experience, but vision. And he delivered—not with fanfare, but with quiet determination and measurable results,” added Hon. Rabuka.
He added that beyond his achievements, perhaps his most enduring legacy was the ethical leadership he embodied. On every platform, at every station visit, he urged public servants to treat their work as a sacred duty.
Prime Minister Rabuka added that Minister Rayalu’s passing leaves a void but his legacy is one of light and guidance.
“To his beloved family—we thank you for sharing this man with us. His strength came from his roots, and you were always at the heart of his service. To the people of Fiji—especially our farmers, workers, and civil servants—let us not let his lessons fade. Let us carry them forward.”
“And may Fiji forever remember the Honourable Vatimi Rayalu—as a steward of land, a champion of people, and a true servant of the nation.”
Other eulogies were also delivered by representatives of the vanua o Vanuavatu, Naivilaca, the Queen Victoria School Old Boys Association, and the church—each paying heartfelt tribute to the life and legacy of the late Minister.
Following the service, the funeral procession made its way through the streets of Suva before arriving at Lovonilase Cemetery, where Honourable Vatimi Rayalu was finally laid to rest.
