The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways, Dr. Andrew Tukana, is currently in Rome, Italy, representing Fiji at the 2025 High-Level Ministerial Special Event titled “From Vulnerability to Resilience – Strengthening Food Security and Better Life in Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries and Landlocked Developing Countries.”
The event brings together leaders from Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Least Developed Countries (LDCs), and Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), who face critical and interconnected challenges in achieving food security and improved nutrition—both of which are essential pillars of sustainable development.
These nations continue to grapple with the compounded effects of climate change, environmental degradation, economic instability, limited access to resources, and a heavy reliance on food imports.
Transforming agrifood systems in these vulnerable nations calls for a multifaceted approach—one that embraces locally adapted solutions, technological innovation, and strengthened partnerships at all levels.
This important platform enables participating countries to share best practices, highlight innovative solutions, and foster constructive dialogue aimed at bolstering food security and nutrition.
It also encourages collaboration among member states, international organizations, development partners, financial institutions, civil society, producer groups, and the private sector.
A key outcome of the event is the identification of concrete actions and renewed commitments to accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger.
The High-Level Ministerial Special Event is primarily aimed at ministers and senior officials from SIDS, LDCs, and LLDCs, alongside a wide range of stakeholders dedicated to building resilience and securing a better future for vulnerable communities.
