The Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, received a courtesy visit from the Managing Director of Pacific Traders Company, Mr. Rakesh Chand, at the ministry headquarters in Raiwaqa today.
The discussion focused on opportunities to promote the use of cocopeat, a natural by-product derived from coconut husks, as an alternative and sustainable growing medium for crops.
Cocopeat technology has shown potential to support soil health, moisture retention, and consistent vegetable production, particularly in areas where water conservation and organic inputs are vital.
Hon. Tunabuna acknowledged the visit as part of ongoing efforts to explore innovation and strengthen partnerships that support the agricultural sector.
“We welcome discussions that introduce sustainable technologies to assist our farmers. Exploring alternatives like cocopeat contributes to soil health, productivity, and resilience in farming systems,” he noted.
Mr. Chand expressed Pacific Traders’ interest in working collaboratively to enhance the awareness and use of cocopeat among local farmers.
“We look forward to supporting the ministry’s goals by sharing solutions that are practical, environmentally conscious, and beneficial for growers across the country,” he said.
The courtesy visit marks a positive step toward enhanced public private collaboration to strengthen agricultural resilience and productivity in Fiji.
