Farmers from across the Northern Division came together today at Batiri Research Station to take part in a hands-on training that focused on improving sheep and goat farming.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, gave participants valuable guidance on improving animal health, boosting productivity, and strengthening on-farm practices.
Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to lifting smallholder farmers by supporting rural innovation and on-the-ground capacity building.
Farmers had the opportunity to engage directly with technical officers, ask questions, and learn practical techniques that they can apply immediately.
Topics covered included better feeding methods, ways to prevent disease, housing improvements, and how strong breeding practices can lead to higher returns.
The Batiri and Nawaicoba stations continue to play a key role by breeding quality livestock and sharing planting material to help improve pastures.
As farmers made their way home, the message was clear: with the right knowledge and support, small ruminant farming has the power to uplift families, strengthen communities, and contribute to a more resilient Fiji.
