The Lakeba Hospital Seawall was completed in the 2024/2025 financial year and has brought a great sense of relief to the island community.
Following extensive arrangements and discussions with the late Honourable Vatimi Rayalu, the seawall now stands as a symbol of resilience for the Lakeba Hospital quarters, which had long been affected by land degradation.
The Government’s intervention through the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways was approximately $250,000 resulting in the construction of a 150-metre boulder revetment seawall.
Director for Waterways, Mr. Marau Vuli said that like many of our islands, Lakeba’s foreshore has been severely impacted by climate change.
“One of the key solutions implemented was the construction of boulder revetments to reclaim eroded land and safeguard vital government infrastructure,” explained Mr. Vuli.
“This seawall will not only protect government buildings and assets but will also play a crucial role in preserving the coastline against further degradation.”
The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways will continue to work with communities across Fiji in addressing climate change impacts, protecting vital infrastructure, and implementing sustainable solutions to safeguard livelihoods and natural resources.
